I kept on chugging this week…

Grand total: 55,165!

I’m (finally) feeling excited about this. A novel.

In celebration I should run outside in the five inches of snow- naked.

Without this NaNoWriMo business, I certainly wouldn’t have taken seriously even the thought to write a novel, not now anyway. Have to say, although I was married to my computer the past 30 days, this was a great experience. Just feeling the creative energy and watching plot twists unfold and characters develop and the occasional lovely metaphor come tumbling out made me feel like a writer.

Now I’ll let the Project marinate for a couple weeks before re-reading all 110 pages single-spaced pages and asking myself: do you really want to spend a year of your life editing a hot, holey mess?

Hmmmm……………….

Writing Retreat: Days 24-27 January 29, 2008

Just a quick update for y’all: the writing retreat was a success! We arrived at the little cabin by the lake in Indiana later than we anticipated. Tired and hungry, I put forth a poor showing of 791 words before I closed the laptop and indulged in pizza, wine, board games and poker with my four fellow writers.

Rise and shine on Saturday and away I went…to victory! I hit 50,000 words and just kept going, ending the day’s writing session with over 51, 000 words!

What next?

To be honest, I’m feeling a little lazy and deflated after all that. I made the goal early, can’t I stop? No. Keep on writing, says NaNoWriMo. You’ll only be giving yourself more material to work with, should you choose to rewrite your novel.

After returning home from work, the gym and eating dinner, I found myself with plenty of time on my hands…and know I have a hot, holey mess to work with…but I can try to make it a tad better by filling in some of those holes while I gather strength for a complete read through. So I sucked it up and sat down at the computer. But at least now is gone the stress of climbing the noveling mountain- and no more 5:30 AM starts! Woop!

I’ll keep on going through Thursday!

Today’s nifty NaNoWriMo daily noveling brief explains “you’re in a period of limen right now…in these neither-here-nor-there periods…where levels of energy and disorder run high.”

Right on, dude. My total word count is over 47,000 and I’m nearing the end. I might well hit 50,000 words tomorrow. But I’m definitely not completed with the story yet (just a few thousand more!), and I’m wondering what exactly is going to happen in the end? I don’t know. I don’t know quite how to get there. I’m excited about what’s written so far and I have the energy to keep working on it. Maybe I’m throwing out new ideas, new complications just so I don’t have to get to the end.

I’m a little nervous about putting that final period (exclamation point, question mark, ellipses) on the story. Because I know it’s not done, the holey, underdeveloped beast that this is turning out to be. “Disorder” is the nice way of putting it. (Does entropy work too?) Because I have to re-read and then I’ll realize, truly realize that this thing is a mess. It’s easy to delude yourself into thinking you have good ideas when they’re only in your brain.

How to get to this imperfect “end point”? This weekend, my writing group, the five of us insane NaNos, are driving to a cabin in Indiana, free from TV and Internet where we’ll buckle down and get some serious writing done. Hopefully, away from the over-stimulating city, the crisp, freaking cold Indianaian air will clear up the brain cells. Throw in a couple power hours and maybe I’ll have a novel when I get back.

And plow I did!

Today was my third-highest day ever: 2, 972! (Why didn’t I write 28 more words to get 3,000? Silly).

After staring at the blinking cursor for well over half an hour, I finally just plowed, not thinking too terribly hard about getting all these threads I threw out tied together. Just keep moving, just keep moving.

I hit my quota but my fingers were still itching to type so after a brief break, I braved the frigid 10-degree windy weather for the scent of pastries and espresso at a new coffeeshop I recently discovered in my neighborhood.

The change of pace was exhilarating, it got me more excited about writing. I was taking my craft out into the world. Hello world! Here I sit. Novelist!

There were certainly more distractions, from the wind banging the door shut to the espresso machine. But all these things inspired the neurons to fire away in my brain.I enjoyed people-watching: steeling glances at the employees, eyeing customers at work on their own laptops or ogling the impressive drinks menu, and staring out the front window at the frozen passers-by. I started thinking of these people as characters in my story. They existed in the world of my creation and I thought how the story would move along with them.

And soon enough, I was off! Typing away again, pausing for a sip of tea, a bite of coffee cake, watching my story move along and write some more.

It’s getting a little harder. With about 42,000 words I know I’ll hit 50,000 words soon enough but I won’t be done with the whole project then. Curses! I realize I’ve thrown out a loooot of stuff on whatever magical whimsy I felt that day and now I don’t know what to do with this stuff. I already cut one character but now I’m stuck with these accordion players and seriously. Where do they fit in? Sigh…

NaNoWriMo says that with the finish line so close “Stomp that foot down on the accelerator and don’t look back.” Day 18, thought I hit the quota, it was a struggle to get there and for the first time since I started the project I had absolutely no desire to look at the thing for a long time. So, with that accelerator in mind, Chris and I sat down on Day 19 for a Power Hour.

The goal: as many words as possible in one hour.

The repercussions: red squiggle lines all over the document, sore wrists and cramped fingers from not pausing typing for more than three seconds.

The results: besides the above, the most amount of words either of us has written in that short amount of time. Me: 2, 179! Chris: almost 1,900! (If only he didn’t need to use the bathroom. Hehehe.)

That inspired me and made me feel much better about myself. Speed Writing is NaNoWriMo on crack. They say focus on the plot of your story, which, I’m finding, is what you need to do to get to the finish line. And when Speed Writing, you’re not getting far if you’re preoccupied with illustrating the precise hue of someone’s dress. I wrote some accordion players in but if I can’t figure how to tie them into the rest of the story, oh well. They’ll be cut out in the editing process. Adios!

As for the follow up day, it was a truly pathetic one since I had it off. In an hour I only managed 680. Triply pathetic when taking into account when can be accomplished in an hour. But… it was a holiday…

Time to plow ahead!

I’ve decided this song is my favorite of St. Vincent’s and am using it as a theme song for my January Project. Helps get me in the writing mood. It’s strange and playful. I imagine myself in a stylized version of early 20th century Paris, wandering the streets of Montmartre in a large, feathery hat and a beautiful, but impractical dress. There’s a circus, too, with elegant trapeze artists and midgets clad in bright costumes and make-up.  And then there’s a fire and we’re all dancing.

Day 16: 2, 194

Day 17: 1, 156 (Oh! Second time I haven’t met my quota. I blame this on dinner with the parental units.)

Someone recently said that this whole NaNoWriMo thing was a bad idea. I chuckled. Because it does sound like a bad idea. What insane person wants to devote their mental powers to hammering out a reeeeeeeeealy awful 50,000-word novel in a month?

Me! What I’m learning is that this is, maybe counter-intuitively, conducive to creativity. Why? Because you are actually creating. If you’re like me, with a full-time job that does not involve writing, there’s nothing pushing you to sit in your chair to write- especially when there’s a new episode of 30Rock on. These deadlines are the things that make you write. And who cares if the first draft is good or not? No one has to see it. I know my first drafts are absolute crap. Always. My writing group will tell you. Besides, there is no conceivable way the first draft is going to be perfect. Even if you spend an hour trying to get a paragraph right the first time around, odds are something will still be wrong with it. You may even have to cut it out. You just don’t know until you’re done, until you’ve stumbled through all the grammatical errors, underdeveloped characters and flaky plot what your story actually is.

So this is a good idea- for me. To just plow away and write down any old thought that pops in my head. It’s exhilarating! The rush when there’s suddenly an idea on the page you didn’t plan on, when characters just tell you what they want to do, instead of the other way around. This is why I love writing. This joy of creation.

Day 13: 2, 037 (Looks like Mondays aren’t my best days).

I’ll share some pearls of wisdom my padre shared with me:

“If we all did things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound
ourselves”

But this is my personal favorite:

“If you don’t keep score, you’re only practicing”

So yesterday, Friday, was the first day I didn’t meet my word count. Only 1, 146! But, that was just what I wrote in the morning. I decided to take my night off because my fellow NaNos and I got together in the evening to vent about our projects, drink some wine and play some games.

But I got cranking again this morning with Chris:
“Bet I can hit 300 words before you.”
“Oh, really?” An eyebrow raise.
Challenge.
Glaring at each other across our laptops.
Accepted.
A silent voice yells: “ready, set, go!”
And we’re off! Chris and I type, fingers flying off across the keys.
“120!”
“Damn it! 97.” Type real fast for a several minutes.
Yell out: “206!”
“Damn it! 183.” Type real fast again.
“318!”
“Ohhh… 274.”
“Ah! I win! Now buy me something!” Chris looks at me and I realize we should have actually bet something. Oh, well. Next time.

Writing with someone, someone that is under the same unbending deadline, fosters competition and so increases your word count. I cannot let my boyfriend out-write me! So your fingers fly across the keyboard. Any word, image, idea that pops into your brain is good enough- because it increases your word count. Which is really what this project is about- seeing what your creative juices do when you’re forced to write. You don’t have time to hem and haw about what may be good or bad, what may work or not. You really won’t know until you’ve finished and re-read all 50,000 words! hKLdghl…what’s that word supposed to be? Who cares, it counts! (Ok, maybe not quite : )

Todays’a total: 3,044!

A Character Takes Over: Day Nine January 11, 2008

An amazing thing happened. Something clicked in my brain as my fingers scurried across the keyboard- one of my characters spoke up! Where before I’d poked, prodded and demanded that she do something. And finally- she did! She steered the scene in a different direction than what I’d intended (and my fingers rushed to keep up with her.) And I’m glad. It played out much better her way, and she gave me a few things to think about for later.

Today I got my second-highest word count since the start of this project: 2,569! Which puts me over 20,000 words- three whole days ahead of the game.
