Last night, sometime before 7:00, I was just going about my business, went to wash my hands and instead of a spray of water, there was this nasty gurgle gurgle, like Frankenstein wheezing, coming from the tap.
Oh, no. Checked the kitchen sink, the shower, the toilet again and all wheezed. No water.
This has happened a [...]

After looking through the few pictures I took, my suspicions were confirmed. I am templed out. (Nearly all the pictures inside the temple Chris took). After you’ve [...]

Weeee! Chris and I are headed to the Shaolin Temple for the weekend to check out the famous kung-fu monks we’ve been hearing so much about. The temple is also surrounded by mountains, which gives us a much needed break from the flat concrete and smoggy haze of Anyang. Now, if we can manage to [...]
Swine Flu Panic!

Swine flu panic has hit Anyang. Actually it hit months ago before there was a case in Hong Kong. It came up repeatedly those last months of the Spring semester, students asking, "you heard of the H 1 N 1? What do you think of this?" To which I replied, nonchalantly, "Eh. You’re all young. [...]

Yesterday, I armed myself with my Chinese phrase book and Chris and boldly walked over to the eyeglass counter in the local shopping mall. I’ve been wanting a new pair of eyeglasses for months because one of my lenses is super scratched and, after more than two years, I just wanted a new pair. I [...]

As I was leaving my art class Wednesday afternoon, one of the students stopped me. “Teacher! Teacher! I have this. My mother made it for you.”
From her bag, she produced a pair of knitted pink baby booties.
Disbelief sent me into instant giggles. I held the little things, so beautifully made I wished they were bigger [...]

Robert called us on Monday with news that some man had set up a little book shop on a sidewalk on campus and that, randomly, some of them were English books. "I don’t know, they just turn up sometimes," he said. The school probably didn’t even know he was coming.
We skipped over and scurried around [...]
“Maybe… what exactly do you want me to do?”

This morning, on our second to last day of vacation, Chris and I pulled ourselves out of bed early to go do… something. We weren’t exactly sure what. Since the phone call last night, Chris and I had been dreading this and we didn’t even know what exactly “this” was.
A couple days ago, Sir Jimbo [...]
